Day 14

Thur - Aug 20
Neskowin, Or
Weather - a bit of drizzle with a higher ceiling but still cool and foggy (high 60’sF or 19/20C)

It was a quiet morning, with Rae working on the web site and me gabbing with some of the folks we’ve met. Around noon the weather improved and it was time to go out and see what the world had in store for us today.

We decided to head north and as we approach the turn to Pacific City we notice a road sign that said “Info Center Lft ½ Mile”. We’d looked for the info center yesterday and found that it had been closed, so when we saw this sign we were sure the Lft meant Left Out (just another great Oregon sign experience).

Just north of Pacific City we stopped at a State Park and NWR. I decide to take the one point four mile trail through the NWR. Just not like good old Cowichan Bay…no birds, one rat (too slow to get a shot), three chipmunks or maybe squirrels that were only heard but not seen, some really nice dewed up spider webs, dry lichen, one dead mushroom, some flowers that I couldn’t identify, beach shots, trail shots, and some shots of the river flowing into the sea.

Wait…..was that an owl I heard? I listened…again, is that an owl? My blood started to rush, the adrenaline started to pump….oh, it’s my bronchial tubes sucking wind from the walk. Hmmm…guess I really was desperate to see some wildlife.

Back to the Red Rocket and Racine and we started out towards the exit, but as we were just leaving the park we noticed some Great Egrets off to the left. YESSSS…birds and big ones! Off I went into the field and was able to get fairly close, snaped enough shots of the egrets to keep me busy sorting for awhile, also saw a blue heron flying by and got some shore bird shots that looked so crisp and clear I could hardly wait to see what they were. Ha..ha again…good shots, we just can’t identify them with any of the multiple field guides that we have.

Once again it is late in the evening after a full day. The adventure continues…
