I had no idea this thing had acorns in its bill. I just saw
the bird from the valley rim, focused and shot. Upon closer
examination I was amazed to see the acorns in its bill: too
small to see from my perch.
I've read that jays sort pine nuts, tossing empties/duds. Believe it or not it's hard to
find acorns around here. A friend wants shrub oak trees and needs acorns to get them but he's up against these critters..
LOL ... they're quite opportunistic when they feed! I usually put out raw shelled peanuts every morning and "call" them in to let them know the peanuts are out. A few regularly maneuver the peanuts (or select just the right ones) in order to get two in their mouths. Cracked me up the first time I saw it!
