Temperature of 118F

Renton, Washington

A record-setting temperature was forecast for the Seattle area today. The record for Seattle is 100F (37C). The thermometer, lying on my driveway in nearby Renton, shows 118F (48C). It got that hot from being placed on the roof of our Jeep.

In the shade of our front porch, the reading was 104F (40C). The tomato garden, facing west, registered 110F (43C) in the sun. The built-in thermometer in the Sienna, parked in the direct sun for hours, was 95F (35C). For this area, those readings are AWFUL.

For a minute, I thought you had moved to Death Valley.

I've been thinking of you out there, my cousin in Seattle says it's wretched, and there isn't a tremendous excess of decent air conditioning. Unlike here, where we happily pump freon into the atmosphere the minute it hits 74.

My advice -- keep the thermometer on the porch.

I drove back from Portland ti Hammond last Thursday. portland was also experiencing these temperatures. I crossed the Columbia at Kelso and started west on highway 30. Very quickly it became overcast and the car outside temperature gauge read a pleasant 68F. Coastal Oregon does have its temperature advantages. Of course, you gotta like clouds and mist.

Wow, that's hot. The thermometer must be too hot to handle with bare fingers.

I heard on the radio that Seattle was breaking records. Not just daily ones--all time ones--and I thought about you. . I can't even imagine that kind of heat. Hope you and Renate are very careful,
