This digital painting was done the old fashioned manual way by using the brush, smudge, dodge, and burn tools. Some soft focus and other blurring was employed but with a mask added to reexpose the sharper areas of the face. The girl has something of a smooth airbrushed look. The background was hand built. A few filters were used (thanks to Filter Forge and some styles from my Photoshop WOW book) to add some texture to the image.
