From the main street in Beaver, steam from the Shippingport Nuclear Power Plant downriver is clearly visible. It was the first nuclear facility in the country, and we grew up with it as an accepted presence. My sister tells me that now there is talk of distributing iodine pills to area residents as a precautionary measure.
