This 11 metres tall column, the Brooding Soldier, marks the site of the battlefield near the small village of St Julien. Here 18,000 Canadians withstood the first German gas attacks from the 22nd -24th April 1915. 2,000 fell and lie buried nearby and this location then became known as Vancouver Corner. The memorial was erected in 1923.
