In 1725 when Canaletto painted "Grand Canal: the Rialto Bridge from the north",
the majority of the sketches used were done on this spot.
However, he was not happy being able to see the rear face of the white building (Palazzo di Camerlenghi).
He overcame this difficulty by sketching it from the next ally along to the left.
That gave him only the front and side elevations that he required,
and that is what appears in the finished painting.
