Went to the market the other day and after putting groceries in the car,
I heard a shrill cry above my head. Looked up to see Mrs. Killdeer pacing
back & forth on the roof. Thankfully, I had my camera with me, because
a few minutes later she was joined by this adorable little chick.
Using mommy as its umbrella, the baby Killdeer stayed with her for a few seconds,
then scurried off & disappeared. All the while the mother Killdeer kept calling.
Mother Killdeer seemed concerned & kept going to the edge of the roof, looking down
to the next level. Odd, I thought, but after all, Killdeer do exhibit strange
behavior at times. At any rate, I was enjoying the show, as I'd never seen a Killdeer
before, much less a chick!
Patience paid off, and finally the whole family appeared (out of nowhere)
and I was able to catch a shot of all 3 chicks & mother Killdeer scattered
across the roof. It's amazing what you might miss if you don't look up!
