Up On The Roof

Went to the market the other day and after putting groceries in the car,
I heard a shrill cry above my head. Looked up to see Mrs. Killdeer pacing
back & forth on the roof. Thankfully, I had my camera with me, because
a few minutes later she was joined by this adorable little chick.

Using mommy as its umbrella, the baby Killdeer stayed with her for a few seconds,
then scurried off & disappeared. All the while the mother Killdeer kept calling.

Mother Killdeer seemed concerned & kept going to the edge of the roof, looking down
to the next level. Odd, I thought, but after all, Killdeer do exhibit strange
behavior at times. At any rate, I was enjoying the show, as I'd never seen a Killdeer
before, much less a chick!

Patience paid off, and finally the whole family appeared (out of nowhere)
and I was able to catch a shot of all 3 chicks & mother Killdeer scattered
across the roof. It's amazing what you might miss if you don't look up!

Hi January,
What terrific records of perfect opportune moments! As soon as I saw your title I heard the song and it looked like the bird was dancing to it in the first shot. Fabulous shots! \/

Very cool. The nest might not have been far away. Had these little guys even fledged yet? It doesn't quite look like it.

The shot with the chick is so adorable. Great series! Nesting on a roof is so unusual for a Killdeer.
