Black Bellied Whistling Ducks

I have had a horrible afternoon. To say that I am afraid of snakes is an underestimate; I am petrified of them. While doing some garden work , I put my hand out to get a potted palm and right under my hand was a huge, steel gray snake. It had its head in a hole and no amount of water from the hose would budge it. I went in the house, had something to drink and sat a while to calm down. Then, I walked outside to go to my car and a beautiful thrush kept flitting around the porch as though calling me. Two steps down the steps and I saw what it was warning me about--a reddish brown snake coiled right at the entrance to the porch. I could not get my key in the door quickly enough to get back in the house.
I couldn't leave by the garage door because the gray snake was there and I couldn't leave by the front door because the brown snake was there.
Eventually, I leaped over the bannister and went another route. But, it has left me shaken and I won't be gardening by myself anymore. And, my camera was in the car so I couldn't get pictures.

What a terrible story! I actually like snakes but I can well imagine what your situation would be like. A fantastic shot you put up though. So beautifully colored.

Fortunately I'm not afraid of snakes because I had an interesting encounter in the garden with a rattlesnake. Now that was not fun. I am glad you are fine. Take care......and next time get a photo!!!!!!!!!!! By the way this is a wonderful photo.

What a story, Snakes aren't among my faves!
Unusual shot of the ducks on branches, they look like wooden toys put up there :)

Go Home is always looking for the darned snakes. We usually just leave them alone.

Wow! what an experience. I don't like snakes either but luckily most are not poisoneous. My daughter and grandson are brave enough to handle them. I don't even like to look at them. This photo however is beautiful right down to the moss on the tree. BV

A nice pair of ducks Coleen..
Living in the area you do I'm surprised you have not come in contact with them more often, especially since you trap-es around the marsh' taking pictures of the many different types of birds...
Snakes and I have an understanding, I leave them alone they leave me alone...

Nice pair of whistlers. The snake was probably getting rid of a rat for you.

Oh my goodness, I can certainly relate to your fear...I can't stand snakes either and I rarely see one. This is a beautiful shot Coleen.

I'm glad you didn't get bit! Sorry about your plight. It would have put me over the edge as well. But, beautiful capture of these two! Never have seen them in trees before! v

You needed to call upon the "Outdoorsman" Scott to gather up these snakes! Glad you're OK! CC

The only good snake is a green one as far as we're soncerned. From our scouting experience we learned, poisionous snakes have elliptical eyes - like cats, harmless ones have round eyes.........if you want to get that close. We're surprised, most of the time snakes leave.

Sounds horrific. Glad you got to post and hopefully clear you mind.

OH MY! Stay safe. Are these events common down your way? I have not seen a snake since I moved to Ohio eleven years ago. They were quite common in KY. Good luck in the future! More great photos like this one will also help calm you.

I'm glad your OK, sort of. I'm with you, can't stand snakes. We had some around here as no one had lived in the house for a few years and we haven't made it comfortable for them and they have moved on. Wonderful capture of these ducks. Good luck!
