Cross-billed Eagle

Northern Vancouver Island

We found a 1994 report of a study of cross-billed eagles that was conducted around the Great Lakes region of North America. Indications, from the report abstract, were that bill deformities were attributed to toxins in that area. We saw this eagle on Northern Vancouver Island, BC and were unable to determine if it was banded (for a study) or not.

He still has grandeur! Almost like as if he were smoking.

Very good capture of this strange beaked Eagle. It makes one wonder how difficult his life in the wild may be. However, since this is an adult, he obviously has been around for a while; so he has been able to survive. The next thought I have is will he genetically now pass the deformity on? Or is the strange beak unique to just him? It would be fascinating to know more about this story.
