May 2009 - Bob Hynes at the Mall Barber Shop in the Hollywood Mall - my barber and friend for the past 36 years (comments below)

Hollywood Mall, Hollywood, Florida

UPDATE: November 2009, due to a lease dispute, the Mall Barber Shop has closed. Bob Hynes was operating at TODAY'S MAN at 4747 Hollywood Boulevard (next to Rickey's) and the phone number is 954-964-5809 but he retired totally at the end of March 2013.

I started going to the Mall Barber Shop in the Hollywood Mall in 1970 after I left active duty in the Coast Guard. After two botched hair cuts at other shops I found a barber I liked at the Mall Barber Shop in the then very popular Hollywood Mall by the name of Ken Capko who worked in the back room of the barber shop (visible in the darkened background beyond the mirrors). Only men were allowed back there and I was getting great hair cuts so I stuck with Ken for every future hair cut. I was in the Coast Guard Reserve and had to get haircuts a day or two in advance of my monthly reserve drills in order to meet the grooming standards. In 1973 Ken moved to Las Vegas to seek his fortune and Bob Hynes became my barber because he had cut my hair once in a while if Ken wasn't there, along with Dave the owner of the shop.

Bob and I can't believe he's been cutting my hair for 34 or 35 years now (at the time I wrote this) and we wonder where the hell time has gone because our kids have been adults for some time now and we both have grand kids. My next door neighbor Mickey Packler started going to Bob for hair cuts a couple of years ago because he couldn't find a decent barber in the Miami Lakes area. Bob bought the shop from Dave a few years ago and they have several barbers working there. They are located in the north end of the old mall to the right of Publix and CVS. Telephone number: 954-983-9599

I don't have a clue as to the artist working in the mall was, but perhaps someone reading these comments will come up with an answer for you.
