Looks like hard dense wood which would make it burn hot with long lasting coals. I've done my share of falling, cutting, splitting and stacking. It is not easy work. Good shot Bea!

Bea, is this a Red Box Elder? I have never seen that color of wood outside of chrerry, Redwood, and cedar!
