It's Not Just A Walk Through The Desert

Texas Canyon, Dragoon, Arizona

...it's a snake sighting. A Sonoran Whipsnake

My granddaughter and I took a nice long walk near my home. I spotted a snake a little way ahead and
let her know to slow down and walk quietly. Of course, we got closer and closer while I took pics.
We were very careful. It was a pretty big snake.
When we got too close for it's comfort it "shot" up, turned around and slithered quickly away!

Yikes! These guys scare the heck out of me. I guess I just haven't been around enough of them. Great series Carol. Very interesting!!

Ugg!! Glad I wasn't there with you Carol...just joking, but I do keep my distance from reptiles as with the "Mud Turtle" I posted today. Have a great weekend Carol and family! V

Very nice documentary, Carol. I can imagine how fast this slithered away because I've seen these really move --- certainly faster than I can run through the brush. And what a nice educational opportunity for your granddaughter.

You find such cool critters on your walks, Carol! Nice shot!

Carol, when I saw the thumbnail picture, I knew my response was going to be, don't step on any snakes. I opened the pictures and there is a snake. Good grief!! That snake must be six feet long!!

Very nice snake, at least it is not venomous.

Nice series of images..
He looks a bit slim, must be on the look out for it' next meal...

Oh Carol, I don't know if I could handle living with these snakes so close by...I have a fit when I see a small garter snake and they are harmless! Great shots!

I like the gentle curve of the Arizona fire road or mining road. The occasional passage of the coach whip, etc. did not bother me, it was the ones that were curled up by the side of the road, the kind that rattle, that disturbed me!
Janet Forjan-Freedman01-May-2009 12:43
Wow! You certainly have a lot of slimy, scaly and slithering snakes for neighbours!
Hank Vander Velde01-May-2009 12:29
Nice series of images Carol. Must be a bit scary to have one's Grandchildren walking there by themselves, assuming these snakes are poisonous.

Oops, I forgot to say what kind of snake this is. Thanks Nealy.
It's a Sonoran Whipsnake.
In six weeks I have encountered four Western Diamond-backed Rattlesnakes, a Sonoran
Lyre Snake, an Arizona Gophersnake, two Western Patch-nosed Snakes and this Sonoran
Whipsnake.
No human or snake has been harmed.
