April 29 2009:
Hindhead By-pass

view map

Hundhead, Surrey

This village on the London to Portsmouth road has long been a bottleneck and only in recent years was it decided to invest in a road by-passing Hindhead. The reason for the delay being the need to protect the Devil's Punch Bowl beauty spot which would mean constructing tunnels as well as overcoming the usual protests from residents.

Construction is well under way with the road due to be completed in 2011. Hindhead will then doubtless lose many of its businesses as many of them rely on passing trade, and to mitigate this, there is a campaign to restore the house of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to attract visitors.
