Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis)

Isle of May, Firth of Forth, Scotland

The 'tubenose' is readily appreciated in this image -it houses a very sensitive olfactory apparatus that (unusually among birds) allows this bird to smell fish oils at a considerable distance away. The tubenose also assists in the production & excretion of a highly concentrated brine solution effectively allowing this bird to drink seawater.
