The dune system at Alvor is sacrosanct and an important ecosystem for a variety of plants, animals and birds; there is a notice threatening a maximum fine of €28,000 for anyone caught driving on the dunes. Here the Câmara Municipal de Portimão (Local District Council) are removing the dunes to make way for a camper van and caravan park and in doing so have destroyed the nesting holes of 42 pairs of Bee-eaters. That's progress for you!!!
