Saturday Morning

Morzhovoi Bay, AK

After our group rejoined on the dune above the Bering Sea we headed toward the same area where the plane had dropped us. This time we did not walk back out onto the muskeg. Besides being scary, it was difficult walking on muskeg because the "ground" did not provide good traction. We spent the night Friday at the same location where we had camped Thursday, the day we arrived. That was near the beach of a large lagoon. Friday had been a long day! In fact, one of our party became so fatigued that he couldn’t walk unassisted for the last mile or so of the hike. We carried/held him up until reaching camp. We all had been issued heavy rubber boots at Elmendorf when we arrived in Alaska. I remember noticing him wearing those boots and thinking how glad I was to have decided to wear my combat boots. The rest of us had chosen much lighter footwear. Suspecting the afflicted hiker might also have hypothermia, we zipped him into his sleeping bag for the night. Fortunately, when we all awakened the next morning, he was almost back to normal. It was Saturday, May 30, Memorial Day, 1970. After breakfast, Sgt Bryant(L), Lt Gene Smith, MSgt Oxford (head by the stove), SSgt Bill Webster, Ned Heathershaw, and Jack Quirk(R) just rested. Shortly after this photo, Gene Smith walked over to the beach to take his own picture of the group. I captured him on film. Later that day, we had a short hike to where we were to be picked-up.
