Cotoneaster, cf Cotoneaster lacteus

Cotoneaster, Cotoneaster cf. pannosa

Cotoneaster (from the Latin for "quince-like," possibly from the leaf shape) is a genus of shrubs
in the Rose family. The genus is similar to Pyracantha except thornless; flowers resemble blackberry
(genus Rubrus, also Rosaceae). Nineteen Cotoneaster species are described in CalPhotos; 18 of those
are from arboreta in Seattle and Vancouver; many of those are probably cultivars in California.

Cotoneaster is generally considered an invasive weed. It is found along the Stevens Creek
riparian corridor in Cupertino and Mountain View, in some cases probably planted. It is one of
the dominant shrubs surrounding the par course (slough) off Charleston Road in Mountain View.
