Rainbow over the Longhorn Grill, Arivaca Junction, Arizona, 2009

A restaurant with a skull for an entrance is an incongruity in itself. To find a rainbow originating between the horns takes the incongruity to another level altogether. There was a massive rainstorm rising behind the rainbow as I made this image, creating a perfect backdrop for this incongruous juxtaposition. I spot metered on the white skull, making the rest of the image even darker, and using the under-exposed shadows to mask a potential distraction created by a car parked right in front of the restaurant.

That's what I intended, Allina. And the two halves of this particular monster are incongruously related -- a skull and a rainbow are opposing symbols -- as I said below, a metaphor embracing both life and death in the same image.

It is fantastic capture. The rainbow and the skull are arranged to create giant monster.

On the other hand, a rainbow can be viewed as a metaphor for life and beauty, and in this case it infuses even a skull, metaphorically speaking, with some of both. Thanks for the thought, Tim, and thank you Rosemarie for enjoying the moment with us. I am sure you will see many more interpretations of this rainbow over the Longhorn Grill once Tim and Iris post their own images of it.

Priceless!

If a giant skull holds the treasure at the end of the rainbow, I suspect we are all in danger.
