One of the most famous landmarks in Liverpool is the stunning palmhouse. It was completed near the end of the 19th Century, being a gift to the city from Henry Yates Thompson (a famous Liverpudlian newspaper proprietor). Despite being a favourite amongst visitors to the park, who enjoyed the exotic plants and flowers inside and wonderful sculptures of explorers and naturalists around its perimeter, it became quite neglected and eventually was closed down in the early 1980s for safety reasons. A "Save the Palmhouse" campaign began in the early 1990s and such was the positive support that very soon a registered charity was formed. With financial support from various national and international funds restoration began in 2000 and was completed 18 months later. Once again it is the centrepiece of the park (along with the boating lake).
