My mechanical timing device requires no batteries---it is steam-powered. In addition, I am on Bhagwan Standard Time, which is anything but standard. It means that "those who would interface with me" (one of the Bhagwan's favorite phrases; used with permission) might have to wait longer than expected, which of course increases the sense of anticipation. That, in turn, guarantees that arrival causes the frown to change into a smile, which makes the subsequent interaction more rewarding.
I can guess what happened here, to save money Dave is using carbon-zinc batteries in his timing device. (how tight can you get).
He will not pay extra for the hi-powered ones. (Lithium ion)
Only last year he was still using Leclanches cells.
Spend the money Dave, I will get my local MP to put your batteries on her expense sheet.
No one will ever notice.
