Would you believe that Clark Gable slept here? This is the ruins of Mayhew Lodge, right at the mouth of the West Fork of Oak Creek. An early cabin evolved into a lodge around 1895, It was here that Zane Grey wrote "Call of the Canyon". The evolving lodge became a favorite destination for President Herbert Hoover, Clark Gable, Susan Hayward, Cesar Romero, Jimmy Stewart, Walt Disney, and Maureen O'Hara.
