On June 27, 1844, armed men with shoe-black on their faces stormed the jail where Joseph and Hyrum Smith were being held. Hyrum died after being shot in the face. Joseph was shot at least five times as he attempted to escape the assassination. These are the death masks of the brothers, as found in the Mormon museum.
