Brigham Young Statue

Salt Lake City

Young was the president of the Mormons from 1847 until his death. He was also the founder of Salt Lake City and the first governor of the Utah Territory. Young led his Mormon followers in an exodus through the desert West. Young is a controversial figure because he was the most prominent Mormon polygamist. He is also often blamed for restrictions on Blacks in the church and his role in the Utah War against the United States government.
