Begun in 1874 as the Oasis Club by the Vanderbilts, Pulitzers, and Morgans. Current building became the Oasis Club in 1887 and was referred to as the Mount Desert Reading Room. President Taft stayed there, but women were not generally allowed into the club until 1921.
