American Robin

Cowichan River Field Trip

We spotted this strangely coloured bird on a CVCC Field Trip to the Cowichan River
and it sparked quite a discussion amongst those in the group. Thanks to my many
friends and contacts for helping to identify this bird. There seems to be some
discrepancy concerning an exact name, one being a Piedbald Robin, another a Partial
Albino Robin and another an Albino Robin (see recent info below). It seems these
strangely coloured birds have been seen all over North America and on other continents
as well. You can see more images of these unusually coloured birds at Google
Images and search for Albino Robin.

Derrick is correct-it is Leucistic

It is truly an incredible sight. Congratulations on getting this wonderful, sharp shot. How about sending it to a birding magazine?

I agree with Derrick, I have a couple of photos that I took 2 years ago on Fuller Lake road and I was told by a bird fancier that it a Lucistic phase.

This American Robin is in a partial leucistic plumage, not albino which is totally different.

Albino seems to be the correct term, however makes one wonder if the mother of this darling creature might have been a little 'gull-able'....?
