The flowers are poppies--a symbol of France...and a foreshadowing of the blood that would be shed... We used symbolism as much as possible in this shoot--in the battlefield, for instance, there's a single iris--a "fleur de lis", again, as a symbol of France. In the proofs--they're a little odd--but in the finished product, they can be played up more.
And in the "Angelic Visions" set, I really wanted Jeanne to be pretty, girly...an innocent, dreamy peasant girl--the type who wanders around in fields, picking flowers and singing...hence the flowers in her hair. That she chose "red" flowers, and gradually comes to the realization of her destiny, as she sees the sword is meant to be rather over-the-top foreshadowing. ;)
Now as to whether it works or not--only the audience can decide! I can only tell you WHY I made certain choices! ;)
