Your Choice 2009-03

This is one view - shot without exposure compensation and using the 28-70mm f2.8 lens. Another view, maybe even more spectacular is at http://www.pbase.com/mkrauss/image/110474751

The pilings in the foreground make this shot something special. At the opposite end of the Embarkedero from her more famous sister, the Goldengate Bridge, this view of the Oakland Bay Bridge is often overlooked. I'm pleased with myself for having seen this gem after having been blind to it for so many years and now often return to see what else I've missed. Technical challenges - use of tripod and timing the shot so that no boats/ships pass through the shot while exposing and large truck headlights are not visible in midspan. Catching and balancing the lights of Oakland reflected in the clouds and the bridge lights reflected in the bay while the pilings were illuminated by the sidewalk lighting behind me and not having my shadow or the camera/tripod shadow in the image was also challenging.

Favorite because it has something magic and foreground makes it so striking.

This one, even though I love the GGB.

I like this one better. The other could do with a little less brightness, I think. Great composition in both cases, with those forlorn pilings in the foreground.

Probably the best I've seen. The piles really add to the composition!

Prefer this one, it's a great image, much more moody than the other.
Jeanne Newman22-Mar-2009 12:53
I really like the depth of tone in this image...the darker areas next to those golden highlights bring a palpable dimenison to the shot. v.

This is awesome! The DOF is spot on and the color tones fit the image perfectly. I really like the reflections in the bay and pier posts in the foreground.

Wonderful! Looks like the use of long exposure has a beautiful effect on the water
