Nish and Anne

Our next home visit was to one of the younger girls in the Safe Spaces group, Elizabeth.

Anne and Elizabeth lost their parents both in the same year. Elizabeth stepped in and took over the care of her siblings. She's remained single in order to do so. Her day begins at 4 am, with a long walk to Nairobi's downtown area to purchase fruits and vegetables at the wholesale market. She then returns back to the slum where she lives, with all the food on her back as she cannot afford to hire a cart. She gets back at about noon and opens her fruit stand selling the produce she brought that day. The sales pay the rent, and feed her family. What is left over is cooked and fed to her family. The next day it begins again.

Her home was clean, it was decorated with pride, and was a tad larger than the previous home we had been in. The rent here was $750 shillings a month.

Anne is very proud of her younger sister Elizabeth, in what she's learning through Safe Spaces.
