My First Crane Fly

Texas Canyon, Dragoon, Arizona

I was gathering up the packaging from our new water heater, when I spotted this, my first sighting
of a Crane Fly.
Crane Flies (family Tipulidae) are often mistaken for giant mosquitoes. They are gangly, spooky
and quite harmless.

Super image, Carol, and a great insect to have around. Love the composition of the photo. We usually have many Crane Flies here. At night they enter the house when the door opens and every morning I have to rescue them and release them to the outdoors again. Many birds like to eat them!

Nice detail and textures in this macro! It's a natural sepia without having to post process it as such!

Fabulous macro. And even if it is harmless, I'm glad we
don't have them around here!

Something new for me. I would have thought it was a mosquito, until you look closer, and no long beak. Great macro capture Carol.

Nice comp, Carol. We've noticed a bunch of these around (and some in) our house just this past week --- more than I've recalled seeing in quite some time.
