February 28, 2009

We got up a little after sunrise. There was no hurry to get underway because we were only making a short three and a half hour journey to Cocoa. On trips in years past we routinely sailed nine or ten hours on travel days. I am starting to like these short travel days. After all, we are in no hurry. We have no destination, so why rush?

I checked the engine room everything was in order. There is slight leak from one of the hoses to the water heater. It is not in an easy spot for a guy my size to get to without removing the cockpit table. I will tighten up the hose connection sometime when we are in one place for a few days.

I pulled the anchor at 8 am. Ten minutes later we had already radioed the Titusville Bridge tender for a bridge opening and were on the other side heading south.

Just west of the Kennedy Space Center we lost satellite reception for about three minutes. That was no big deal, but I would not be comfortable with that happening in unfamilar waters. It was a gentle reminder that we must be prepared to navigate using paper charts, a clock, and the sun if the government shuts down the GPS system for any reason.

The weather forecast is calling for hazardous marine condition for Sunday and part of Monday. We found a nice anchorage in Cocoa. Shibumi's anchor seems to be set well so we will weather the storm right here. If it doesn't blow too hard we will go ashore on Sunday for brunch... if it does we will stay onboard and watch TV and surf the Internet.

Looks like your journey is starting off well despite the leak and storm. I know how much you and Jill enjoy these trips and I do too, enjoying them from Texas with you! Safe sailing, my friends!

You are off to a great start. And I endorse the take it easy schedule. Why not! The gulls had much to this shot.
