BX

Cold Bay Air Force Station, AK

The Base Exchange(BX) at Cold Bay was quite small in comparison to those that I had visited at larger Air Force Bases. However, it was an important addition to our daily life outside of work. Only open for a few hours at certain times, it was a place where we could buy amenities that enabled us to live a somewhat "normal" existence. There we could purchase snacks, clothing, cameras and film, handguns and ammunition, and just about anything else that one could expect in a general store. The BX was operated by two airmen in their off-duty time. They were paid for their services through the Exchange. Sgt Otis Sumlin and SSgt Martin Canery are behind the counter. Martin was the BX manager, and his office was as small as a tiny closet...as shown in another photo. I purchased two cameras and film that I used for most of my photos through the BX. There, I also purchased the cassette tapes that I used to record my experiences at Cold Bay. The BX was on the first floor of the composite building. It was across from the motor pool and, if I remember correctly, adjacent to the warehouse.
