NCO Club

Cold Bay Air Force Station, AK

The Club was one of the most popular places for hanging-out during non-working hours. I very much appreciated that the four officers were welcome at the NCO Club. Although not much of a drinker, I thoroughly enjoyed the socialization that took place. That being said, there were two occasions at Cold Bay where I consumed too much alcohol. One was at the Club. In that instance, a young airman challenged me to a drinking contest in which we switched drinks to see who lasted longer while drinking what the other had been consuming. I won. Of course, I outweighed him by at least seventy pounds, and that might have had something to do with it! (However, note that I said I consumed too much alcohol!) The other time I drank too much was one weekend when I was feeling sorry for myself, and missing my family. For years after that experience, I could not even stand the smell of dark rum!
