NCO Club

Cold Bay Air Force Station, AK

SSgt Martin Canery is standing with his back to the camera. Another of these young men always seemed to be in the club when I was there. I had the impression that he was drowning his sorrow for being remote. It was interesting to observe the different reactions of airmen to their remote assignment. Some of the crew seemed to never go outside, while others of us could not get enough of the great outdoors! The Club was one of the most popular places for hanging out during non-working hours. Everyone was welcome, regardless of rank. The rec room and the NCO club were the two main places for socializing at the radar site. The rec room was used for watching movies, playing pool, or just relaxing in some other way. I often reflected upon how it must have been much more difficult to be at a remote assignment like this without having the desire to experience all of the attractions of the outdoors in such an amazing place.
