Dawn at the water meadows - Colin

Candover Valley

Close to where I live is the Candover Valley, which is a series of chalk downs running south to the Itchen Valley.
It is pleasant but unexceptional countryside and I still haven't managed to capture an image that you could look at and recognise as being in the Candovers.

One of my favorite parts is where springs rise in the water meadows around Abbotstone, forming a tributary that flows down to join the river Itchen a mile or so away.
To get to this part requires climbing the odd fence and picking your way through the boggy parts and talking nicely to the groundsman ....

This is so tranquil! It's also ageless and the B&W enhances that impression. One can easily imagine farmers grazing their cattle on these flood plains two centuries ago.

I like small rivers; they seem more accessible than the vaster ones.

Awww, well then, the only thing that might have changed now is there might be snow on it!

Colin, I think it is lovely! are there fish in the streams that run down to the river? It just looks like a place to go fishing. I'm curious how long ago was it (do you think) that you took this shot? How much does the area look different now days?

Not an area I know well Colin, even though I lived not too far away. I bet you were pleased when this came out, I *never* managed to get anything like this with film :( Alistair
