Hetch Hetchy

Hetch Hetchy Reservoir

This photograph was taken from atop the O'Shaughnessy Dam and overlooks the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir.
In it you can see both the Tueeulala (upper left) and Wapama (center left) Falls. Hetch Hetchy Dome and Holana Rock are reflected in the slightly icy water.
The visible part of the reservoir makes up less than 20% of its area.
This reservoir was created (against the wishes of John Muir) partly as a means to assure a water supply for San Francisco after the debacle of the 1906 eartquake and subsequent fires.
This is an area worthy of further photographic exploration!

I'd love to hop in a time machine and to back for some shots of that place before they turned it into a reservoir.

Good looking area. We've never been there. If the 20% means it's REALLY deep, SF is in better shape than we are. All our reservoirs are pretty shallow, and way down.

Beautiful area. We had plans to backpack here once, but it was washed out in the floods that year.

Ah, what a great memory shot for me. I camped just to the right of that waterfall many years ago. There were a whole bunch of boy scouts nearby and they all went fishing. As the walls of the canyon don't allow one to get close to the water in very many places we went down to fish near them. They were using nightcrawlers and hadn't caught anything. But you could see huge trout swimming out there. I caught a grasshopper and tossed it out there with a plastic bubble float. It may not have even hit the water when a huge german brown trout grabbed it. It was so funny watching all the scouts scramble to catch grasshoppers!!! But by then the commotion of me catching the fish scared the rest of them away. It sure was yummy! That night a momma bear put one of her babies on her shoulder and stood on her hind legs so the baby could reach out food sack which was hanging quite high. Smart bear! You may have seen a lot of glass in the parking lot by the dam? Smart bears everywhere.
