Down on the Erie Basin Marina, about 10 oF outside
with the wind blowing between 10-15knots. This hearty
fisherman is dragging his gear out to the desired
location on the ice, he augers a hole, then pops his
tent-like shelter over his hole with built in sledge
and chair and sits there waiting for the fish to bite.
I used to watch the Eskimos do this on the Kotzebue Sound
when I lived in Kotzebue, Alaska. It was mostly the Eskimo
women, they didn't have these kinds of shelters, the
temperatures were usually about 20-30 degrees colder and they
appeared to catch more than the guys I saw this morning.
None the less, I admire these guys that have selected a
pasttime requiring awareness of equipment, knowledge of
nature and a hearty appreciation for the elements.
