The idea for this painting came to me after spending a day in the studio drawing Jasper, playing jazz on his double base. The life class next door complained that the jazz playing was very loud. People downstairs also found the noise distracting. Jasper was relocated to another corner of the studio to minimise the disturbance. At some point, as I was drawing the studio and everybody concentrating hard on their work, the idea came to me that the life class might storm "Drawing the Unexpected" and that the rebels might be led by Liberte, as in the Delacroix painting. This scenario would, of course, require some modification to the Tricolour, which now bears the call to "Tranquillite", as well as the familiar "Liberte, Egalite et Fraternite". As with most uprisings, those caught up in the action usually do exactly what they are trying to banish, in this case causing much more disturbance than the jazz playing they were complaining about. Smashing the double base is clearly disproportionate retribution."Plus ca change" in the real world. Its all done in Painter. This was an opportunity to try out different brushes and its possible to see different areas painted slightly differently as I switched brushes. I started with mainly oil pastels, then switched to real bristle brushes. The various figures were either taken from sketches I did in the studio, or of photos I took of myself adopting various stances. I then adapted each to make them different, fatter, taller, man or woman etc.
