Saturn January 2007

San Diego, CA

Saturn, with moons Rhea, Dione, and Tethys. Enceladus is at the south pole, but is overwhelmed by the brightness of the planet.

Imaged with Meade DSI II-Color, through an 8-inch LX90 at f/60 with stacked 3x and 2x barlows, effective focal length 12000mm. Imaged over a period of 10 minutes in Fits format / Normal Operation, 310 frames in the final stack, 0.2200 seconds each. Stacked in Envisage, with Quality Filter 75% and Edge Enhancement Medium.

RGB merged using PhotoShop. Luminance layer drizzle-stacked and increased 50% in size/resolution, with Registax wavelets, slight Gaussian blur (to remove drizzle artifacts), and Unsharp Mask applied. Moons captured with 9 sub-frames of 0.500 seconds each.

other sizes: small medium original auto
