It was in the reign of King Jaiyavaraman VII (1181-1220) that a series of hospitals and Dhamasala were built along the road from Angkor to Phimai...Prasat Phanom Wan is one. Unlike Phimai, it was a Khmer Hindu temple. Interestingly, a community of Buddhist monks has occupied the site in modern times. When we visited it was in transition -- renovation was in progress.
