There are a number of Trumpeter Swans in our estuaries now, this was taken at the Cowichan River estuary... wonderful to hear them call.....
The Trumpeter Swan is the largest of all swans. In the 1930 they had almost been wiped out from over hunting for swan skins for powder puffs and ladies hats. Small pockets remained and they were place on the endangered species list both in Canada and the US. Through dedicated management they are now about 23,000 birds. 7,000 winter along the Vancouver Island coast. They spend the summer and nest in the Artic. They mate for life but if one bird dies the other will find a new mate,
