Dec. 6, 2008

Son of a $^%@#

Dang it. On the 23rd I wrote about how Hung tried to part me and my money with a new 70-200. Hung was fighting hard to get me to buy the lens. He told me that he’d be there after Christmas if I wanted to come back. Hung had no idea that he would be jobless in 2 days. I am sure of that.

While Cord camera is a consumer end store for the most part, they had a pro shop close to my house. A place that I could go to and buy ANYTHING I needed. What they didn’t have they could get in three days. It was great.

On the 25th, after a busy day of working, The employees were all told that this had been their last day. The store would be closed starting tomorrow. Thanks for your loyal service……..and oh yeah, Merry Christmas. Now get out.

This sucks. There should be rules governing this kind of thing. You should have to give some kind of notice. These employees were counting on being employed through Christmas and now they are sitting at home scratching their heads, trying to figure out how to have Christmas for their kids. In simpler times, they could have gone to church and just enjoyed the day with their families. Now they have to buy lots of stuff or they are bad parents that don’t love their kids. No pressure.

I stopped up here and found that they wasted no time. The store is EMPTY. Nothing but a few displays and extension cords. I’m glad I didn’t buy that 70-200. They were closing anyway and didn’t bother to tell Hung. He wouldn’t have seen the money. He’s just a cog that they could throw away.

Back to Cleveland I go. At least now I can write off my mileage.

Something tells me this isn't just due to lack of consumer demand but a freeze in credit. Businesses just aren't able to get loans to operate...but who knows. I can't believe they couldn't even survive through Christmas...and now Hung has to find a way to survive during the holiday season. Our house is crumbling around us. I don't envy our new president's job, that's for sure.

I hate to say it, but I think being laid off and having businesses go out of business will be a regular part of our future.

You want Jim to open a studio - like he doesn't already have enough on his plate now? Maybe when he retires in another 20 years or so...

I like John's thinking and you could hire Hung as your first employee...
It is sad and I think we will see more and more of these images on pbase in the future...
my heart goes out to Hung and the other employees.

That's so sad.. and a real sign of the times. How awful to be jobless at any time, but this time of year is so much harder.. heating bills, food bills, not to mention the holidays - which is brought into perspective when there is no weekly income. There but for the grace of god go a whole freakin' lot of the people in this country, by the way. Very scary.

I wish all the best for Hung and hope he's able to find a way to provide for himself and/or his family if he had one. Buying that 70-200 probably wasn't the straw that broke the camels back, so don't worry about that.

Hmmm...maybe you should open a studio in it's place?

How terrible for those workers - Christmas season is such a dreadful time to be left jobless.
