double-crested cormorant

Calgary, Alberta

These bird have quite a distinct fishy smell and also don't have the oils that most waterfowl have which keeps them waterproof. Consequently, one can often see them floating around with their wings spread out in order to dry off and also, they tend to sag down in the water as this one shows.

Wonderful! I had never got to see a Comorant until we went to Tybee Island, Ga. a few years ago. This is a great shot!

We have lots of Cormorants here in CA and you always see them with their wings spread in the drying formation. Make one wonder why if they are water birds they were not given the proper oils.
