Slow business, Tozeur, Tunisia, 2008

Business seems slow for this butcher. His products are on display behind him, but his potential customers walk on by without stopping. Meanwhile, he keeps busy by talking on the phone. I liked the contrast between his world of white – coat, phone, chairs – and the passing woman’s traditional black garment. The foot placement of, both, meanwhile, is complementary.

What is ordinary to Tunisians might seem extraordinary to Americans. And that is what makes travel exotic, Carol. In travel photography, we try to juxtapose the ordinary with the extraordinary, and let the contrast speak, as we do here.

More ghoulish dead things displayed in this image. The woman doesn't give them a thought of a glance, the man doesn't seem to give the passing woman a thought or a glance either, both seem nonchalent, even bored.

Cultural and technological contrasts make wonderful photographic subjects, because they produce incongruities and reinforce human values. Thanks for noting this here, Iris.

Like blue jeans, the cell phone is a symbol of the emergence of a new economy. In this image, the passing woman dressed in traditional garb provides a cultural counterpoint that contrasts the new and the old, the modern and the traditional. We see this in so many third world countries and you illustrated it so succinctly here.

The phone was key to this image -- it does indeed contrast contemporary technology vs. traditional ways of doing business with traditional customers. Thanks for noting it, Tim.

The phone here is so important for me - modern technology against traditional marketing and traditional garb.
