1930's - Air Guide for Miami, depicting airfields in Dade County at the time

Dade County, Florida

Thank you to Alvin Lederer for contributing a large high resolution image of the Miami Air Guide that depicts various airports in Dade County. There are other closer-up versions of this image located in specific airport galleries on this site.

Items of special interest on this image:

1. the presence of the Hialeah Airport, also known as the 54th Street Flying Field, that was located on the north side of Hialeah Drive (NW 54th Street) between E. 4th Avenue and E. 8th Avenue (NW 42nd Avenue)

2. Coral Gables Flying Field, located on the south side of Bird Road (SW 40th Street) and near NW 67th Avenue

3. Chapman Field next to south Biscayne Bay that has "Army Air Service" labeled with it,

4. Pan American Seaplane Base has "Coast Guard Base" labeled above it in parenthesis

5. All-American Airport (later Miami International Master Airport and Master's Field) has not been expanded yet to the west to meet the eastern border of Miami Municipal Airport or to the north up to NW 123rd Street or so. The northern boundary appears to be several blocks south of NW 119th Street

6. Navy Airport is the label for Opa-locka Airport

7. the dirigible hangar at Opa-locka Airport is labeled as Municipal Dirigible Hangar indicating that the hangar was owned at the time by the City of Miami and not the Navy.

8. Viking is labeled as a "seaplane base" which indicates that it was no longer a land airport
