Bhutan's colorful dance festivals (tsechus) feature mask dancing and
very colorful costumes. The original purpose of the festivals was to
instill the religious stories of the past to an illiterate populace.
Even today, people walk for miles to attend the events although more
tourists seem to be in the audience.
The Jampey Lhakhang temple was initially constructed in 659 and is home
to this spectacular festival. Several of the dances serve as fertility
rites for the people. I hope these rites do not affect foreigners.
