Woodpeckers are just beautiful in flight and at Huay Kha Kaeng WS there are many Black-headed WP flying around the campsite. I had a go with it using the 300/2.8+1.4x+1dmk3. When I saw the first birds flying between the trees I quickly moved into position and managed to capture some frames of the very last woodpecker in the flock. He was a little far away to get a great one but I'm very happy with this result. The 1dmk3 did a great job locking onto the bird. Center AF-point is the recommended setting but I found all AF working better for me in this situation (with the 1DmkIII). Maybe because this bird is difficult to follow and you need some extra AF-points to get a lock. Also I use C.fn III-2 (AI Servo Tracking Sensitivity) set to Slow.
Next time I visit this place I will go for flyers of these birds. With some more experience of how the birds moves and where to position yourself it should be possible to get a sharp nice capture.
