Where the road got its name is unclear. Some believe it is based on the value of the gold ore-bearing fill that was used to construct the road. Others that it refers to the high cost of building a road over Red Mountain Pass at 11,008 feet. And an old joke that once you drive the winding road with few guardrails despite straight drop-offs of hundreds of feet, you wouldn’t drive it again for a million dollars.
