The entrance road begins 4 miles from Grand Junction and quickly becomes steep and twisting -- with a tunnel -- as it leads up to the top of the rock formation. On the far right of this photo, the purplish flat geologic formation is Grand Mesa -- the largest mesa in the world. Once on top, it is not at all arid and is covered with aspen, spruce, and fir trees, quite unlike the National Monument.
