1943 - article about Miami bowling alley popularity with locations of the bowling alleys at the time (comments below)

Miami, Florida

Thank you to Alvin Lederer for contributing this great article.

For Google search purposes I am repeating the names of the bowling alleys and addresses:

1. Bol-mor, 2490 NW 7th Avenue, Miami
2. Palace Bowling Center, 2101 N. Miami Avenue, Miami
3. Lucky Strike, 2975 SW 8th Street, Miami
4. Playdium Lanes, 3737 SW 8th Street, Miami
5. Brunswick Bowland, 220 NE 13th Street, Miami

The article mentions that the above bowling alleys had a total of 66 alleys (lanes) - that's only an average of 13 lanes per bowling alley, which is extremely limited compared to newer bowling alleys built in the decades to follow.

Hi, Thanks for remembering the duck pin alleys. My Dad Charles Watkins built and owned all the alleys back then. He layed those alleys by hand himself. It was booming and he loved it along with my mom Margaret Irene Watkins. I have a picture of them in front of the old Lucky Strike alley and a copy of the artical that he owned all the alleys at that time.

There was also a duck pin alley on S.W. 8th between 28 and 29th Avenues. My family moved to Miami in 1945 and, the alley was closed shortly thereafter. My dad owned a bar and grill at 2945 S.W. 8th Street for 30 years. It was almost a landmark.

There was a Duck Pin alley located on the corner of S.W. 1st Street and Beacon Blvd. The alleys were cement and there were no walls, only a roof. I recall the balls being smaller and without holes, I think.
It was an inexpensive family outing in the 40s.
